masterstrophy.pngBrandon Roberts wins 'back-to-back' Boys NAYBC Masters as Emily Allen lifts the Girls Masters trophy

14th / 15th September 2013

Brandon Roberts and Emily Allen celebrated being champions yesterday, September 15th, as they lifted the 2013 National Association of Youth Bowling Clubs (NAYBC) Masters Trophies this weekend at Airport Bowl, Harlington in England.

The NAYBC is the association responsible for governing the junior sport of bowling in England, and the Masters is one of the most Prestigious titles in the tournament calendar. The Masters is the final event on the ranking calendar.

Emily Allen and Brandon Roberts - 2013 NAYBC Masters Champions

For Roberts, this is his second consecutive Masters, having lifted the trophy in 2012 at Norwich.  In the past season Roberts has lifted gold medals in the 2013 Junior Triple Crown in Dunfermline, bronze in the 2013 Junior London International, took first in the Classic Junior Singles and medalled and set a new senior boys doubles record and high-game in the Junior Inter-Counties.  He added a second sanctioned 300-game to the list as well.

For Allen this is her first Masters trophy, and is a fitting end to a season that has included amongst others, results on the Adult England Tour, County representation and gold medals in the 2013 Junior Triple Crown in Dunfermline and second place in the Classic Junior Singles.  Allen also had high game in the 2013 Junior Inter-Counties.

For both of these talented young athletes with their feet firmly on the ground, these achievements represent just a part of their decorated junior bowling careers.

The Event - Day 1

The Masters format comprises 4 blocks of 5 games each, with two blocks on the Saturday and two on the Sunday.  After the first block, Roberts took his place on the top of the Boys table, a place he was to keep for the whole weekend, with 77 points and a pinfall of 954.  In second place Alex Howell was just 2.5 points behind with 74.5 and 954, and Thomas Copeland third with 65 and 91. For the girls it looked like it was 2012 happening again with last years girls Champion Keira Reay first on 75.5 and 946 above second placed Rebecca Spiking on 74 and 942 and Jenna Buller on 72 and 929.

Other boys places included Ben Mellars in fourth with 64 and 917, and John Pickard fifth with 59 and 907.  Sean Hussey took sixth sharing 59 points with Pickard but -5 on pinfall with 902.  For the girls, Jenna Buller lept to third with 72 and 929, with last years EYC medallist Rebecca Daly fourth with 71.5 and 928.  Shola Attryde took fifth with 69.5 and 902 and Frankie Plewis - also an EYC medallist took sixth with 65.5 and 907.

After lunch and block 2, Roberts continued to dominate the first place finishing the 10 games on 163 points and 1994 pinfall, above John Pickard on 123.5/1854 and Sean Hussey on 121/1810.  Copeland had a difficult block dropping to 14th and Howell found himself in sixth after a lighter afternoon set.  Moving up fast was George Ackerman, taking second place with 123.5 and 1854, after rising 10 places from 12th, to be 39.5 points behind Roberts.  Pickard and Hussey both climbed 2 places each to third and fourth consecutively with 212 and 1810 for Pickard and 117.5 and 1832 for Hussey.  Alex Green climbed four places to fifth with 116.5 and 1811.  Last of the big moves saw Aaron Faulconbridge climb from 14th to seventh.

Emily Allen gained eight places in block two, to take the lead position from Keira Reay.  Here started one of the days major defences as Allen deftly fought the advances from Reay, who has been throught the Masters pressure-mill before.  But with another ten games and a night's rest ahead it was still wide-open.  Allen ended Saturday on top with 151 and 1916, with Reay second on 144 and 1867, just seven pins in it.  Franchesca Plewis had climbed 3 places to third with 140.5 and 1840 with Rebecca Spiking dropping two places to fourth on 128 and 1800.  Jenna Buller also saw her place drop by two as she ended the day in fifth on 124.5 and 1793, ahead of Rebecca Daly in sixth, also down two places on 123.5 and 1795.

Day 2

Day 2 and all eyes were on Brandon Roberts and George Ackerman, and Emily Allen and Keira Reay as all bowlers had equal chance of lifting the silverware, but would Roberts buffer of 39.5 points be enough?  At lunch after block three, Roberts, Ackerman and Pickard maintained their 1-2-3 positions from the start of the day, and it was Alex Green moving up one place to fourth and Ben Mellars moving up four places to ninth that catch the eye.  Roberts pretty much maintained his lead of Ackerman, ending the block 242.5 and 3057 versus Ackerman's 203.5 and 2912.  Alex Howell and Aaron Faulconbridge remained sixth and seventh respectively.

The girls similarly saw few changes, with Allen topping the block on 230.5 and 2873 over Reay on 216 and 2795.  Plewis, Spiking and Daly maintained their third, fourth and sixth placings as Joanna Hackett continued to 'bubble-under' moving between 7th and ninth throughout the event so far.   Making moves this block were Lorna Scott up four places to fifth with 193.5 and 2710 and Sarah Lovegrove up seven places to eigth with 168.5 and 2631.

The Final Block - the last 100 points

As the 'guns' fell silent after 20 games, Brandon Roberts still maintained a near-40 pins advantage over George Ackerman, to take first.  Ackerman was delighted with second having played the event strapped for an ankle injury and worried if he'd be able to finish.  a great finish from two great team mates.  Elsewhere in the table it was fluid game-by-game.  At the finish, climbing five places to third, Sean Hussey and just half a point behind Hussey was Ben Mellars on 247.5.  Aaron Faulconbridge finished up two more placesin fifth as John Pickard fell two to take sixth and Alex Green fell three to take seventh.  Gavin Cox gained two places for eigth, Luke Timbrell closed the top-ten after climbing two places as well, and Alex Howell took ninth after dropping from sixth.

Into the final block of games, with up to 100 points available for five wins.  There was no change at the top of the girls table, with Allen, Reay, Plewis and Spiking finishing 1-2-3-4 respectively.  Jenna Buller dropped one more place to finish eigth and Lorna Scott also dropped from fifth to ninth as Rebecca Daly finished one down in seventh.  Making movements in the last block were Sarah Lovegrove who clombed a further three places for fifth and Joanna Hackett who lifted herself up three places to sixth.  Completing the top ten, Shola Attryde.
